Description
Isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI, CAS 4098-71-9) is an aliphatic diisocyanate monomer carrying two reactive isocyanate groups on a cycloaliphatic ring structure. It is supplied as a colourless to slightly yellow liquid and is registered under EC 223-861-6. No E-code applies to this substance.
IPDI reacts with polyols, polyamines, or polyaspartic esters to form polyurethane networks through urethane or urea bond formation. In automotive and aerospace coatings, its aliphatic structure resists UV-induced yellowing, making it suitable for topcoats and clearcoats where colour stability is critical. In adhesive and sealant formulations, it functions as a cross-linker that builds chemical and mechanical resistance.
IPDI is available in standard industrial grades and supplied in bulk, IBC, and drum formats in compliance with REACH regulation (EC 1907/2006). Suppliers operating within the EU must maintain a Safety Data Sheet and substance registration documentation. Buyers should confirm purity specifications and NCO content with the supplier prior to procurement.
