Description

L-Sodium Lactate (CAS 312-85-6) is the sodium salt of lactic acid, commercially available under trade names including PURASAL S, PURASAL S/HQ 60, and PURASAL S/PF 60. It carries no E-number designation and is commonly referred to simply as sodium lactate or sodium DL-lactate across food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical documentation.

In food processing, sodium lactate extends shelf life of cooked meats by lowering water activity and inhibiting pathogen growth, particularly Listeria monocytogenes. In personal care formulations, it functions as a humectant by binding moisture within the stratum corneum, and as a pH buffer in leave-on skin products targeting the skin's natural acid mantle.

Sodium lactate is supplied as a liquid syrup, with grades available to meet FCC (food-grade), Ph.Eur. (pharmaceutical), and USP specifications. It is subject to REACH registration for industrial supply within the EU. Procurement teams should confirm grade suitability against application-specific purity and microbial limits.
