Description
L-(+)-Tartaric acid (CAS 87-69-4, EC 201-766-0), also known as L-tartaric acid, TLA, TAR, or FEMA 3044, is a naturally occurring dicarboxylic acid derived primarily from wine production byproducts. With the molecular formula C4H6O6, it is the optically active L-form used across food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic applications.
In food and beverage manufacturing, tartaric acid functions as an acidulant and pH buffer, providing the characteristic sharp taste in confectionery and stabilizing emulsions in baked goods. In pharmaceutical formulations, it acts as a buffering agent in effervescent tablets and as a heat stabilizer in certain drug delivery systems. Cosmetic formulators use it as a skin conditioner and antioxidant co-stabilizer in topical preparations.
L-(+)-Tartaric acid is available in food-grade (FCC), pharmaceutical-grade (Ph.Eur.), and technical grades, supplied as white crystalline solid in 25 kg bags or bulk quantities. It is fully REACH-registered and compliant with EU food additive regulations under Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008.
