Description

Lauryl betaine (CAS 683-10-3) is a zwitterionic surfactant derived from lauric acid, carrying both positive and negative charges within the same molecule. It is commercially available under trade names including AM 301 and Ammon, and is also referenced by abbreviations such as c12bet and anonbl in formulation literature.

In personal care formulations, lauryl betaine reduces interfacial tension between oil and water phases, enabling stable emulsification while simultaneously conditioning hair and skin through electrostatic interaction with negatively charged substrates. In water treatment, its antimicrobial activity disrupts microbial cell membranes at low concentrations, making it effective as a biocide additive.
