LEAD

Lead (CAS 7439-92-1, EC 231-100-4, formula Pb, HS 78011000) is a dense, soft heavy metal supplied under trade designations including PS 2, SSO 1, Lead S 2, and Pb-S 100. It carries no E-code designation. Bulk lead is sourced as refined primary or secondary metal in various physical forms.

In battery manufacturing, lead serves as the active electrode material in lead-acid cells, where its electrochemical reactivity with sulfuric acid drives charge and discharge cycles. As a heat stabiliser in PVC compounding, lead compounds neutralise hydrogen chloride released during thermal processing, preventing polymer degradation. In radiation shielding applications within medical and nuclear sectors, its high atomic density attenuates X-ray and gamma radiation effectively.

Lead is available in refined grades including 99.97% purity primary lead conforming to EN 12659 and secondary grades for industrial use. Supply is subject to REACH Regulation (EC) 1907/2006, with lead classified as an SVHC. Packaging formats include ingots, shot, and bulk pallet quantities.
