Lexidronam pentasodium (CAS 7651-99-2) is the pentasodium salt of ethylenediamine tetramethylene phosphonic acid, commonly identified by the abbreviations EDTMPa5, EDTMP 5Na, and EDTMPS Na5. It is commercially available under the trade name Dequest 2046 and carries no assigned E-code. It belongs to the aminophosphonate class of chelating agents.
In water treatment, lexidronam pentasodium inhibits scale formation by binding calcium, magnesium, and iron ions that would otherwise precipitate on heat exchanger surfaces and pipework. In textile and pulp processing, it stabilises hydrogen peroxide bleach baths by sequestering heavy metal contaminants that catalyse peroxide decomposition, improving whitening consistency and reducing chemical waste.
