In concrete admixtures, it acts as a plasticizer by adsorbing onto cement particles and creating electrostatic repulsion, reducing water demand without sacrificing workability. Water treatment applications exploit its chelating capacity to sequester calcium and magnesium ions, inhibiting scale formation.
