Description

Magnesium carbonate (MgCO3, CAS 13717-00-5) is an inorganic mineral salt derived from magnesite ore, commercially available under trade names including LH 1253 and SH 123L. It carries EC number 604-004-9 and does not hold an E-code designation for food additive use in the EU.

In water treatment, magnesium carbonate raises pH by neutralising acidic effluents through carbonate buffering, reducing corrosion in distribution systems. In pharmaceuticals, it functions as an antacid excipient and flow-control agent in tablet manufacturing. The mining and construction sectors use it as a refractory filler, where its thermal stability under high-temperature processing is the operative property.

Magnesium carbonate is sourced in grades conforming to Ph.Eur. and FCC specifications, supporting pharmaceutical and food-contact applications respectively. It falls under REACH registration requirements for EU supply. Typical packaging formats include multi-wall paper sacks and bulk bags, with light, bulky powder characteristics requiring appropriate handling provisions.
