Description
Magnesium hydroxide (CAS 1309-42-8) is an inorganic alkali sourced from magnesium-rich brines or minerals. It is commercially available under trade names including FR-20, Gilumag, Marinco H, S/G 84, and Baschem 12. No E-code applies to this substance.
In water treatment, it neutralises acidic effluents and raises pH without the overshoot risk associated with stronger alkalis, making dosing more controllable. In plastics and construction materials, it functions as a halogen-free flame retardant by releasing water vapour above 300°C, cooling the substrate and diluting combustible gases. It also serves as a buffering agent and antacid active in pharmaceutical formulations.
Magnesium hydroxide is available in powder grades conforming to Ph.Eur., FCC, and USP standards, as well as technical grades for industrial applications. All commercial grades supplied within the EU fall under REACH registration requirements. Packaging typically includes 25 kg bags and bulk options depending on grade and application.
