Description

Magnesium lactate (CAS 18917-93-6) is the magnesium salt of lactic acid, commercially known under trade names such as Promagsan. It is also referred to as bis(lactato)magnesium or magnesium L-lactate and carries no assigned E-number in the EU, though it is recognised as a safe food-grade mineral source in multiple jurisdictions.

In food and nutrition applications, magnesium lactate serves as a bioavailable magnesium supplement in fortified beverages and dietary products, where the lactate anion improves gastrointestinal tolerance compared to inorganic magnesium salts. In pharmaceutical formulations, it functions as a stabilising agent and pH buffer, helping to maintain product integrity across storage conditions.

Magnesium lactate is available in food-grade and pharmaceutical-grade forms, with compliance to FCC and Ph.Eur. monographs depending on the grade supplied. It falls under REACH registration requirements for EU market access. Typical packaging includes 25 kg bags or fibre drums, with bulk options available on request.
