Description

Magnesium silicate (CAS 1343-88-0) is an inorganic salt derived from magnesium and silica, commercially available under trade names including Magnesol, Florisil, Novasorb, Magmasil, and Magsorbent. It is not assigned an E-number for direct food additive use in the EU but is regulated as a processing aid in several food applications.

In edible oil refining, magnesium silicate functions as an adsorbent that selectively binds polar degradation compounds, free fatty acids, and colour bodies, restoring oil quality during frying operations. In pharmaceutical tablet manufacturing, it acts as a glidant and flow aid, reducing interparticle friction to improve powder flow through compression equipment. Cosmetic formulators use it to control rheology and absorb excess sebum in pressed powders and dry-texture products.

Magnesium silicate is supplied in food-grade, pharmaceutical-grade (Ph.Eur. compliant), and technical grades. It is registered under REACH and available in multi-wall paper sacks and bulk quantities. Buyers should specify surface area and particle size distribution, as these parameters directly affect adsorption capacity and performance.
