Malonic acid

Malonic acid (CAS 141-82-2) is a dicarboxylic organic acid also known as propanedioic acid or dicarboxymethane, with the molecular formula C3H4O4. It carries no assigned E-code and is not classified as a food additive under EU regulation, though it finds application across food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical manufacturing.

In pharmaceutical synthesis, malonic acid serves as a reactive intermediate in the classical malonic ester synthesis, enabling controlled chain elongation of carbon frameworks. In personal care formulations, it functions as a pH buffer and mild skin conditioner by donating protons within a defined acidic range. Food-grade applications include its use as a flavoring acidulant and antimicrobial agent.

Malonic acid is available in pharmaceutical-grade (Ph.Eur.-aligned) and technical-grade forms, supplied as a white crystalline solid.
