Melamine phosphate

Melamine phosphate (CAS 20208-95-1, EC 243-601-5) is an inorganic-organic salt formed from melamine and phosphoric acid, supplied as a solid powder. It is commercially available under trade names including Amgard NH, Melagard MP, and SLFR-7. No E-code designation applies to this substance.

In polymer and textile applications, melamine phosphate functions through a dual intumescent mechanism: on exposure to heat, it releases phosphoric acid, which chars the substrate, while melamine decomposition generates nitrogen-based gases that dilute combustible vapors. This makes it effective as a halogen-free flame retardant in polyurethane foams, coatings, and cellulosic fiber treatments.

Melamine phosphate is supplied in powder form and is subject to REACH registration requirements within the European Economic Area.
