Melamine phosphate

Melamine phosphate (CAS 41583-09-9) is an inorganic-organic salt formed from melamine and phosphoric acid, supplied as a solid powder. It is also known under trade designations including Fyrol MP, SLFR-7, MPP-A, and DMP. No E-code applies to this substance.

In intumescent flame retardant systems for polyolefins, polyurethane foams, and coated textiles, melamine phosphate functions as both an acid source and a blowing agent. On exposure to heat, it releases phosphoric acid, which chars the substrate, while the melamine component decomposes to release nitrogen-based gases that expand and insulate the char layer, interrupting combustion.

Melamine phosphate is available in standard and micronised powder grades to suit different processing requirements. The substance is registered under REACH and suppliers should provide a compliant Safety Data Sheet. It is typically packaged in 25 kg bags or bulk containers; buyers should confirm grade specifications and RoHS relevance for electronics applications.
