Melissic acid

Melissic acid (CAS 506-50-3, EC 208-042-3) is a long-chain saturated fatty acid derived from natural waxes, particularly beeswax and carnauba wax. It is also known as myricic acid or NSC 53832. No E-code designation applies to this substance.

In personal care formulations, melissic acid functions as a structuring agent and emulsifier, helping to stabilise wax-based systems such as lip balms and solid creams by contributing to crystalline matrix formation. In lubricant applications, its long carbon chain provides boundary lubrication properties, reducing friction between metal surfaces under load.

Melissic acid is supplied as a slightly yellow fluffy crystalline powder and is subject to REACH registration requirements for EU commerce. Procurement teams should confirm supplier documentation for purity grade and batch traceability.
