Description

Methanol (CAS 67-56-1, CH4O) is an aliphatic alcohol also known by the trade names Carbinol and Methylol. It carries no assigned E-code and is classified under HS code 29051100. It is distinct from ethanol and should not be confused with colorant designations such as CI 13020 or Acid Red 13020.

In pharmaceutical manufacturing, methanol serves as a reaction solvent and extraction medium, dissolving polar and non-polar compounds across a broad range of synthesis steps. In plastics production, it acts as a feedstock and polymerization initiator in formaldehyde-based resin systems, including urea-formaldehyde and melamine resins. The oil and gas sector uses it to inhibit hydrate formation in gas pipelines.

Methanol is supplied in technical, reagent, and HPLC grades, with pharmaceutical-grade material conforming to Ph.Eur. and USP monographs. It falls under REACH regulation (EC 1907/2006) and is classified as a Category 1B flammable liquid. Standard packaging includes IBCs, drums, and bulk tanker delivery.
