Description

Methyl acrylate (CAS 96-33-3), also known as methyl propenoate, methyl acrylic ester, and under trade designations such as NSC 24146, is a reactive acrylic monomer belonging to the acrylate ester family. It serves as a fundamental building block in polymer synthesis across industrial manufacturing.

In coatings and adhesive formulations, methyl acrylate undergoes free-radical polymerization to form polyacrylate chains, contributing flexibility and adhesion to the final film or bond layer. In textile and leather finishing, it copolymerizes with other monomers to produce binders that improve substrate durability and surface uniformity. It is also incorporated into packaging laminates where controlled polymerization delivers targeted barrier properties.

Methyl acrylate is supplied in inhibited monomer grade to prevent premature polymerization during storage and transport. It is subject to REACH registration requirements within the European Union. Packaging is typically available in drums and intermediate bulk containers, with documentation including safety data sheets compliant with EU GHS standards.
