Description
Methylene chloride (CAS 75-09-2, EC 200-838-9, CH2Cl2) is a chlorinated solvent also known by the trade names Narkotil, Solaesthin, and Freon 30, as well as the designations R 30 and Solaesthin. It carries no assigned E-code and is classified under HS code 29031200.
In pharmaceutical manufacturing, methylene chloride dissolves active compounds during tablet coating and extraction processes, where its low boiling point allows complete solvent removal under mild conditions. In polyurethane foam production, it acts as a physical blowing agent, volatilizing during the exothermic reaction to generate cell structure without chemical decomposition.
Methylene chloride is supplied in technical, pharmaceutical-grade, and REACH-compliant specifications, with Ph.Eur. grade available for regulated applications. Due to its classification as a substance of very high concern under REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, procurement requires confirmed downstream use authorization. Standard packaging includes drums and ISO tank containers.
