Description
Methylisothiazolinone (MIT, CAS 2682-20-4) is a synthetic heterocyclic biocide sold under trade names including Kathon CG 243 and Cutisan. It belongs to the isothiazolinone chemical family and carries no assigned E-code, distinguishing it from food-grade preservatives. It is registered under REACH and classified as an active biocidal substance under EU BPR.
In water treatment, MIT disrupts microbial cell membranes and inhibits enzyme activity, controlling bacterial and algal growth in cooling towers and process water systems. In rinse-off personal care formulations, it functions as a preservative at low concentrations, preventing microbial contamination throughout product shelf life. It is also applied in coatings and adhesives to protect against in-can spoilage.
MIT is supplied in aqueous solution at varying active concentrations, with grades available for industrial and cosmetic applications. Compliance documentation including REACH registration, Safety Data Sheets, and technical data sheets is available upon request. Packaging formats are confirmed at the time of order.
