Milk thistle extract

Milk Thistle Extract (CAS 84604-20-6, EC 283-298-7) is a standardised botanical extract derived from Silybum marianum, commonly identified by the trade names Silymarin and Silymarine. It contains a concentrated complex of flavonolignans, primarily silybin, and is registered under REACH with no assigned E-code for food applications.

In pharmaceutical formulations, Silymarin functions as a hepatoprotective active, where its flavonolignan content inhibits lipid peroxidation and supports liver cell membrane integrity. In cosmetic preparations, it acts as a chain-breaking antioxidant, neutralising free radicals to protect formulation stability and skin-facing actives from oxidative degradation.

Milk Thistle Extract is available in standardised grades specifying Silymarin content, typically 70–80% by HPLC, and must comply with Ph.Eur. monograph requirements where applicable. Suppliers operating within the EU are subject to REACH registration obligations. Packaging is typically supplied in fibre drums or double-lined polyethylene bags for bulk procurement.
