Montanic acid

Montanic acid (CAS 506-48-9) is a long-chain saturated fatty acid derived from montan wax, a lignite-extracted natural wax. It is commercially available under trade names including Licowax S and Licowax SFL, and is also referenced as HW-SW and NSC 407311. It carries no assigned E-code.

In plastics processing, montanic acid functions as an internal and external lubricant, reducing friction between polymer chains and metal surfaces during extrusion and injection moulding. In personal care formulations, it acts as an emulsifier and consistency agent in anhydrous systems such as lipsticks and deodorant sticks, where its high melting point contributes structural integrity.

Montanic acid is supplied as a white fine crystalline powder and is subject to REACH registration requirements for EU-based procurement. Buyers should confirm grade specifications against intended application, as purity levels vary between technical and cosmetic-grade material.
