Description
N-Methylethylamine (CAS 624-78-2), also known as NMEA, Methylethylamine, or Ethylmethylamine, is a short-chain secondary amine with the formula C3H9N. It carries no assigned E-code. It belongs to the aliphatic amine class and is commercially identified under abbreviations including NMEA and the notation (CH3)(C2H5)NH.
In food and pharmaceutical applications, NMEA functions as a pH buffer by accepting and donating protons within defined formulation ranges, stabilizing active ingredients against degradation. In personal care, it acts as a crosslinker by forming covalent bonds between polymer chains, improving film integrity in leave-on and rinse-off systems. Its antimicrobial activity derives from disruption of microbial membrane potential.
NMEA is supplied in liquid form and is subject to REACH registration requirements for EU market access. Procurement should confirm grade suitability against FCC specifications for food-contact applications or Ph.Eur. standards where pharmaceutical use is intended. Standard packaging includes drums and IBC containers.
