N-Methylmorpholine N-oxide (NMMO, also known as methyl morpholine oxide or NSC 73198) is an amine oxide with CAS 7529-22-8 and EC 231-391-8. It carries no assigned E-code. The compound is commercially supplied as a clear colorless to yellow aqueous solution.
In the textile and pulp and paper industries, NMMO serves as the primary solvent system for dissolving cellulose in Lyocell fiber production, where it breaks hydrogen bonding within the cellulose matrix to enable direct spinning. It also functions as a stoichiometric oxidant in organic synthesis and as an antimicrobial agent in water treatment, where it disrupts microbial cell membranes.
NMMO is supplied under REACH registration and is available in standard industrial liquid grades.
