Description

N-Propylethanolamine (CAS 16369-21-4, EC 240-426-6), also known as 2-(propylamino)ethanol or propylaminoethanol, is a secondary alkanolamine with the molecular formula C5H13NO. It carries no assigned E-code and is not classified as a food additive. The compound combines an amine group and a hydroxyl group within a single molecule.

In waterborne coatings and metalworking fluids, N-propylethanolamine acts as a pH buffer and neutralising agent, stabilising emulsions and preventing resin precipitation. Its amine functionality also provides corrosion inhibition by adsorbing onto metal surfaces and displacing moisture. In personal care formulations, it adjusts pH in emulsified systems where a mild, controlled alkalinity is required.

The product is supplied as a clear liquid and is registered under REACH. Procurement teams should confirm supplier SDS documentation and purity specifications prior to ordering. Standard packaging formats for industrial supply typically include drums and IBC containers.
