Description

Natamycin (CAS 7681-93-8) is a naturally derived polyene macrolide antifungal produced by fermentation of Streptomyces natalensis. Commercially known under trade names including Delvocid and Synogil, and approved as food additive E235, it is also referenced in pharmaceutical contexts as natacyn and by the abbreviation PMR.

In food manufacturing, natamycin is applied to the surface of hard cheeses and cured meats to inhibit mold and yeast growth by binding to ergosterol in fungal cell membranes, disrupting membrane integrity without affecting bacteria. In pharmaceutical and personal care formulations, it functions as a preservation and skin-conditioning agent at low active concentrations.

Natamycin is supplied as a white to off-white solid, typically standardized to 50% active content on a lactose or glucose carrier, with grades conforming to Ph.Eur., FCC, and E235 specifications. It falls under HS code 29419090 and is subject to REACH registration requirements for EU trade.
