Nitriloacetic acid

Nitriloacetic acid (NTA, CAS 139-13-9) is a synthetic aminopolycarboxylic acid chelating agent commercially available under trade names including Chel 300, Titriplex I, Complexon I, and IDRANAL. It carries no assigned E-code and is identified under EC number 205-355-7.

In water treatment, NTA sequesters calcium, magnesium, and heavy metal ions by forming stable soluble complexes, preventing scale deposition and improving process efficiency. In personal care formulations, it functions as a chelator and humectant, binding trace metals that would otherwise destabilise emulsions or degrade active ingredients, while also contributing mild buffering capacity.

NTA is supplied as a white crystalline powder and is subject to REACH registration requirements within the EU.
