Description
Nitrous oxide (CAS 10024-97-2), also known as laughing gas, dinitrogen oxide, or R 744A, is an inorganic gas with anaesthetic and analgesic properties. It is recognised under MeSH ID D009609 and has a long-established role in medical and industrial chemistry.
In anaesthesia and pain management, nitrous oxide acts as a dissociative anaesthetic by inhibiting NMDA receptors, reducing pain perception without full sedation. It is also used as a propellant in food-grade aerosol applications, where its low reactivity prevents oxidation of sensitive formulations during dispensing.
Nitrous oxide is available in pharmaceutical grade meeting Ph.Eur. specifications, as well as food-grade and technical grades. It is supplied as a compressed liquefied gas in cylinders of various capacities. Procurement must account for REACH registration requirements and applicable national regulations governing medical and industrial gas handling.
