Norbixin

Norbixin (CAS 542-40-5) is a carotenoid-derived pigment obtained from annatto seeds, approved in the EU as E 160B. It is the water-soluble, alkaline-extracted form of bixin, commonly supplied under trade designations including AFC-WS 4600P and NORBIXIN(P). Its molecular formula is C24H28O4.

In food manufacturing, norbixin functions as a yellow-to-orange colorant in dairy products such as cheese and processed spreads, where it binds to protein matrices to deliver stable, heat-resistant coloration. It is also applied in snack coatings and plant-based products, where its water solubility allows uniform dispersion in aqueous formulation systems.

Norbixin is available in food-grade solid form compliant with EU E 160B specifications and FCC standards.
