Nordihydroguaiaretic acid

Nordihydroguaiaretic acid (NDGA, also known as masoprocol) is a naturally derived phenolic compound extracted from the creosote bush (Larrea divaricata). It carries no assigned E-code and is catalogued under CAS 500-38-9 and EC 207-903-0. It is also referenced in literature as dihydronorguaiaretic acid.

In cosmetic and personal care formulations, NDGA functions as a chain-breaking antioxidant by scavenging free radicals and inhibiting lipid peroxidation, extending the shelf life of oil-based systems. It is also evaluated as a UV-stabilising agent and has documented activity in hair dye applications, where it contributes to oxidative colour processes.
