Description
Octocrylene (CAS 6197-30-4) is an organic UV filter used in sun care and industrial formulations, commercially available under trade names including Parsol 340 and Eusolex OCR. It absorbs UV radiation in the UVB and UVA II range, converting photon energy into heat rather than allowing it to cause photochemical damage.
In sunscreen and cosmetic formulations, octocrylene stabilises other photolabile UV filters such as avobenzone by quenching their excited states, extending overall photoprotection. In coatings and polymer applications, it protects substrates from UV-induced degradation, reducing yellowing and surface cracking over time.
Octocrylene is supplied as a neat liquid and is subject to REACH registration requirements within the EU. It is regulated under EU cosmetics legislation with defined concentration limits for leave-on and rinse-off products. Procurement teams should confirm current regulatory status, as ongoing scientific review has prompted restrictions in several markets.
