Description
p-Toluenesulfonic acid (CAS 104-15-4), commonly known as PTSA or tosic acid, is a strong organic acid supplied as a clear aqueous solution. It carries no E-code designation and is also referenced under trade names including TL65LS and PTS Acid. It belongs to the sulfonic acid family and is fully miscible with water and polar solvents.
In coatings and adhesives, PTSA functions as an acid catalyst to accelerate crosslinking reactions in melamine and urea-formaldehyde resin systems, reducing cure times at lower temperatures. In textile and leather processing, it acts as a pH buffer and dispersing agent, improving dye uptake uniformity. It also serves as a polymerization catalyst in plastics and polymer manufacturing.
PTSA solution is available in standard industrial grades and is subject to REACH registration requirements for EU supply. It is not listed under FCC or Ph.Eur. monographs. Packaging typically follows bulk liquid formats standard for industrial organic acids, with SDS documentation provided in compliance with EU GHS/CLP regulation.
