Phenanthrene

Phenanthrene (CAS 85-01-8, EC 201-581-5, formula C14H10) is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon composed of three fused benzene rings. It is also known under the names Phenantren, Phenantrin, and NSC 26256, and carries no assigned E-code. It belongs to the broader PAH chemical family, sometimes referred to as polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons.

In printing and packaging applications, phenanthrene functions as a colorant intermediate, contributing to pigment synthesis through its conjugated ring structure, which enables selective light absorption. It has also been investigated as a fragrance and flavorant component, where its weak aromatic character serves as a building block in controlled formulation contexts.

Phenanthrene is supplied as fine crystalline platelets and is subject to REACH registration requirements within the European Union.
