Description
Phenyl salicylate (CAS 118-55-8), also known commercially as salol, Salphenyl, Seesorb 201, and registered under FEMA 3960, is an ester formed from salicylic acid and phenol. It carries no assigned E-code and is classified within pharmaceutical intermediates and UV-active specialty chemicals.
In polymer and coating formulations, phenyl salicylate absorbs UV radiation and re-emits it as heat, slowing photodegradation of the substrate. In pharmaceutical and personal care applications, it functions as a preservative and skin conditioner, with its ester bond providing controlled hydrolysis to release salicylic acid at the site of application.
Phenyl salicylate is supplied as a fine crystalline powder meeting Ph.Eur. and FCC grade specifications where applicable, and is registered under REACH (EC 204-259-2). Standard packaging includes fibre drums and multi-layer bags; documentation including SDS, CoA, and REACH compliance letters is available on request.
