Phosphorus

Phosphorus (CAS 7723-14-0, EC 231-768-7, formula P) is a non-metallic element supplied as red phosphorus, commercially available under trade names including Exolit 405, Novared 280, and Hishigado CP. It carries no assigned E-code and is identified by HS code 28047000. The element is also referenced as 15P or element 15 in technical documentation.

In flame retardant applications, red phosphorus functions by forming a phosphoric acid char layer on polymer surfaces during combustion, physically blocking oxygen access and inhibiting thermal degradation. It is incorporated into engineering plastics such as polyamides and epoxy resins used in electronics enclosures and printed circuit boards, and is applied in aerospace composite materials where halogen-free fire protection is required.

Red phosphorus is available in stabilised, coated, and masterbatch grades to reduce dust hazard and improve handling safety. Compliance with REACH regulation applies, and suppliers should confirm substance registration status. Packaging typically includes sealed drums or bags with inert atmosphere to prevent oxidation.
