Description
Phthalic anhydride (CAS 85-44-9, EC 201-607-5), commonly abbreviated as PAN and also known as phthalandione or 1,3-phthalandione, is a cyclic organic anhydride derived from the oxidation of naphthalene or ortho-xylene. It carries no assigned E-code and is classified under HS code 29173500.
In alkyd resin production, PAN reacts with polyols to form polyester chains that serve as the backbone of solvent-borne coatings, controlling crosslink density and film hardness. It also functions as a reactive intermediate in plasticizer synthesis, where esterification with alcohols such as 2-ethylhexanol yields phthalate esters that modify polymer flexibility in PVC compounds.
Phthalic anhydride is available in technical and industrial grades, supplied as flaked solid or in molten bulk form. It is subject to REACH registration requirements within the EU. Packaging typically includes 25 kg bags, bulk bags, and isotank shipments for molten material.
