Piroctone olamine

Piroctone olamine (CAS 68890-66-4) is a zinc-free antimicrobial active sold under trade names including Octopirox, M 875, and OCTO. It is the ethanolamine salt form of piroctone, classified under EC 272-574-2, and carries no assigned E-code. It belongs to the hydroxypyridone class of biocidal compounds.

In anti-dandruff shampoos and scalp treatments, piroctone olamine inhibits the growth of Malassezia fungi by disrupting metal-dependent enzymatic processes within the fungal cell. It also functions as a preservative booster in rinse-off and leave-on cosmetic formulations, and is used in antimicrobial coatings where sustained surface protection against mold and bacteria is required.

Piroctone olamine is supplied as a white to slightly yellow crystalline powder, compliant with REACH registration requirements for the European market. It is subject to Cosmetics Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 concentration limits.
