Potassium iodide

Potassium iodide (CAS 7681-11-0, EC 231-659-4, formula KI) is an inorganic salt supplied under trade names including K1-N, Kaiod, Pherajod, Ceoiodin, and Knollide. It carries no assigned E-code but is recognised under pharmaceutical and food-grade regulatory frameworks across European markets.

In pharmaceutical manufacturing, potassium iodide serves as an active ingredient in thyroid-blocking formulations, where iodide ions competitively inhibit thyroid iodine uptake. In food and nutrition, it functions as an iodine fortification additive in salt and feed premixes, correcting dietary iodine deficiency at precisely controlled dosage levels. It also acts as a catalyst and buffering agent in select chemical synthesis processes.

Potassium iodide is available in Ph.Eur., USP/FCC, and technical grades, supplied as powder, granules, or round-particle crystals.
