Potassium sorbate

Potassium sorbate (CAS 590-00-1, FEMA 2921) is the potassium salt of sorbic acid, commonly supplied as a white granular or powder form under trade references including Potassium 2,4-Hexadienoate. It is a well-established antimicrobial preservative registered under REACH and recognised in both food and cosmetic regulatory frameworks across the EU.

In food and beverage manufacturing, potassium sorbate inhibits the growth of yeasts, moulds, and certain bacteria by disrupting cellular enzyme activity, extending shelf life in products such as baked goods, dairy, and beverages. In personal care formulations, it functions as a preservative and mild skin conditioner, often replacing or complementing parabens in leave-on and rinse-off products.

Potassium sorbate is available in food-grade (FCC compliant) and cosmetic-grade specifications, with Ph.Eur. grade available for pharmaceutical applications. It is supplied in compliance with EU Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008 for food use and Annex V of the EU Cosmetics Regulation. Standard packaging includes 25 kg bags.
