Description

Procaine (CAS 59-46-1) is a synthetic local anaesthetic compound, also known under the trade name Novocaine and by regional synonyms including Procain, Procaina, Nissocaine, and Spinocaine. It carries no E-code designation and is classified as a pharmaceutical intermediate under HS code 2922.49.3700.

In pharmaceutical manufacturing, procaine serves primarily as a precursor and active ingredient in injectable local anaesthetic formulations, where it blocks nerve signal transmission by inhibiting sodium ion channels at the nerve membrane. It is also used in the preparation of procaine penicillin, a depot antibiotic formulation in which procaine slows the release and absorption of penicillin G into the bloodstream.

Procaine is supplied as a solid and is available in pharmaceutical-grade quality conforming to Ph.Eur. monograph standards. Material is subject to REACH registration requirements within the European Economic Area. Procurement enquiries should specify intended application and required documentation, including CoA and safety data sheets.
