Description

Propane (CAS 74-98-6) is a hydrocarbon gas supplied under designations including R290, HC-290, A-108, and E944. It is a member of the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) family and is handled and transported in liquefied form under moderate pressure.

In food aerosol applications, propane functions as a propellant by vaporising at ambient pressure to expel product from pressurised containers without chemically interacting with the contents. In refrigeration systems, R290 serves as a low-GWP refrigerant, transferring heat through compression and expansion cycles. It is also used as a fuel gas in industrial cutting and heating processes.

Propane is available in technical and food-grade (E944) specifications, with food-grade material complying with FCC and EU purity standards for use in foodstuffs. It is subject to REACH registration and classified under CLP regulations. Supply is typically in pressurised cylinders or bulk tanker delivery depending on volume requirements.
