Propionic acid

Propionic acid (CAS 79-09-4) is a short-chain carboxylic acid commercially available under trade names including Prozoin and Luprosil, with FEMA designation 2924. It occurs naturally in fermentation processes and is produced industrially via the Reppe synthesis or hydrocarboxylation of ethylene.

In grain and silage preservation, propionic acid inhibits mold and bacterial growth by disrupting microbial cell membranes at concentrations typically between 0.1% and 1.0%. In food flavoring, it contributes characteristic sharp, cheese-like notes at controlled dosages. It also serves as a catalyst and pH buffer in chemical synthesis and personal care formulations.

Propionic acid is supplied in food-grade (FCC), feed-grade, and technical grades, with Ph.Eur.-compliant material available for pharmaceutical applications. It falls under REACH registration requirements within the EU. Standard packaging includes IBC containers and bulk tankers, with HS code 29155000 applicable for import and export documentation.
