Quinoline yellow

Quinoline Yellow is a synthetic dye derived from quinoline, commercially identified under CI 47000 and CI 47005, and also known as China Yellow. It is supplied as a water-soluble form (CI 47005) for aqueous applications and an alcohol-soluble form (CI 47000) for solvent-based systems. No E-code designation applies to this substance.

In cosmetic formulations, Quinoline Yellow functions as a colorant by absorbing light in the violet range to produce a characteristic greenish-yellow hue, making it suitable for shampoos, soaps, and hair products. In pharmaceutical applications, it is used to color tablet coatings and oral liquids, where consistent dye strength and batch-to-batch stability are critical to product identification.

Quinoline Yellow is available in powder form and must comply with REACH registration requirements for supply within the EU. Cosmetic-grade material is subject to Annex IV of the EU Cosmetics Regulation, which restricts its use to non-rinse-off products in certain markets.
