Description
R 134a (CAS 811-97-2), also known as HFC 134a, F 134a, FC 134a, Norflurane, and Arcton 134a, is a hydrofluorocarbon refrigerant and propellant gas. It replaced CFC-based compounds following the Montreal Protocol and carries no ozone depletion potential.
In automotive air conditioning, R 134a transfers heat by cycling between liquid and vapour states within closed-loop systems, providing efficient cabin cooling. In aerospace and defense applications, it functions as a pressurising agent and solvent carrier in specialised cleaning and maintenance formulations where precise evaporation behaviour is required.
R 134a is supplied as a liquefied gas under pressure and is subject to EU F-Gas Regulation (No 517/2014), which governs handling, containment, and reporting obligations for fluorinated greenhouse gases. Procurement requires confirmation of REACH compliance and, where applicable, F-Gas handler certification. Packaging is typically in refillable cylinders or bulk containers.
