Description

Rutile (CAS 1317-80-2) is a naturally occurring crystalline form of titanium dioxide, supplied as a fine white powder under trade designations including TR 700 and RSC 5. It is distinct from the anatase polymorph in its higher refractive index and greater thermal stability, making it the preferred TiO2 form for demanding industrial applications.

In coatings and plastics, rutile TiO2 functions as a UV absorber by scattering and reflecting ultraviolet radiation, slowing photodegradation of polymer matrices and binder systems. In construction materials such as exterior renders and sealants, it provides opacity through high light scattering efficiency, reducing the quantity of pigment required to achieve full coverage.

Rutile is available in standard pigment-grade powder form and supplied in compliance with REACH regulations. Relevant purity specifications vary by end-use sector, including cosmetic-grade requirements for personal care applications. Procurement teams should confirm applicable grade, particle size distribution, and surface treatment with the supplier prior to ordering.
