Description

Saponin (CAS 8047-15-2, EC 232-462-6) is a naturally derived glycoside extracted primarily from plants such as Quillaja saponaria and Yucca schidigera. It is commercially available under designations including HD 1907, HW 1218, and S 30575. No E-code applies to this substance in EU food additive legislation.

In food and beverage production, saponin functions as a natural emulsifier and foaming agent, stabilising oil-in-water emulsions and generating persistent foam in beverages by reducing interfacial surface tension. In agricultural formulations, it acts as a wetting and dispersing agent, improving pesticide uptake by lowering the contact angle on leaf surfaces.

Saponin is supplied as a light yellow to tan powder and is subject to REACH registration requirements for EU commerce. Food-grade material may conform to FCC specifications, while pharmaceutical applications reference Ph.Eur. monographs. Standard packaging formats include fibre drums and multi-wall bags; HS code 29389090 applies for import classification.
