Selenium

Selenium (CAS 7782-49-2, EC 231-957-4, formula Se) is a non-metallic element recovered primarily as a byproduct of electrolytic copper refining and sulfuric acid manufacture. It is also known under the designations CI 77805, VANDEX, and SE000500, and is classified under HS code 28049090.

In electronics manufacturing, selenium is used in photovoltaic cells and rectifiers, where its photoconductive properties allow it to convert light into electrical current. In glass production, it neutralizes the green tint caused by iron impurities and, at higher concentrations, produces red-tinted glass. It also serves as a micronutrient source in animal feed formulations to prevent selenium-deficiency disorders.

Selenium is supplied in powder form and is subject to REACH registration requirements within the EU. Procurement should confirm grade specification against intended application, as purity levels vary between technical, feed-grade, and pharmaceutical-grade material. Standard packaging formats include drums and multi-layer bags.
