Description
Silica gel (CAS 112926-00-8) is the amorphous, noncrystalline form of silicon dioxide, commercially available under trade names including WAKOGEL G, SILICAR CC-4, and SILICA GEL 7. It is distinct from crystalline silica and carries no E-code designation for food applications in the EU.
In coatings and adhesives, silica gel functions as a rheology modifier by forming hydrogen-bonded networks within the matrix, increasing viscosity and preventing sagging without permanent thickening. In rubber and elastomer compounding, it acts as a reinforcing filler and stabilizer, improving tensile strength and oxidative resistance at elevated processing temperatures.
Silica gel is supplied in powder and granule grades, with particle size and surface area specifications varying by application. It is subject to REACH registration requirements within the EU and is available in technical, FCC, and Ph.Eur. grades depending on end-use. Standard packaging includes multi-wall bags and bulk containers.
