Silver sulfate

Silver sulfate (CAS 10294-26-5, EC 233-653-7), also known as disilver sulfate or silver(I) sulfate, is an inorganic silver salt containing approximately 69% elemental silver. It carries no assigned E-code and is registered under REACH as a substance of very high concern due to its silver ion content.

In water treatment, silver sulfate releases Ag+ ions that disrupt bacterial cell membranes, providing controlled antimicrobial action at low concentrations. In analytical and organic chemistry, it functions as a selective oxidation catalyst, particularly in COD testing where it activates persulfate to oxidize chloride-interfering compounds before measurement.

Silver sulfate is supplied as a technical or reagent-grade crystalline powder, compliant with REACH registration requirements. Packaging typically ranges from laboratory quantities up to bulk drums for industrial procurement.
