Description
Sodium bisulfite (CAS 7631-90-5), also known as sodium bisulphite or Natriumbisulfit and sold under trade designations such as FR-62 and BISULFITE, is an inorganic sodium salt with the formula HNaO3S. It carries EC number 231-548-0 and falls within the Salts & Minerals category. It does not hold an assigned E-number.
In water treatment, sodium bisulfite neutralizes residual chlorine by reducing it to chloride, protecting downstream membranes and ion exchange resins. In textile and paper processing, it acts as a bleaching and reducing agent, breaking chromophore bonds to whiten fibers and pulp. Food and pharmaceutical manufacturers use it as an antioxidant to inhibit oxidative degradation in sensitive formulations.
Sodium bisulfite is available in food-grade and technical-grade forms as a powder or crystalline solid. Regulatory compliance covers REACH registration and FCC specifications for food applications. Standard packaging includes 25 kg bags and bulk quantities; Ph.Eur.-grade material is available for pharmaceutical procurement. HS code: 28323010.
