Sodium bromide

Sodium bromide (CAS 7647-15-6, EC 231-599-9, formula BrNa) is an inorganic bromide salt also referenced under the names NSC 77384, Sedoneural, bromnatrium, and Sanibrom 40. It carries no assigned E-code and is traded in industrial contexts as Sodium Bromide 45, denoting solution concentrations used in oilfield applications.

In oil and gas drilling, sodium bromide functions as a high-density completion fluid, controlling wellbore pressure without damaging reservoir formations. In water treatment and disinfection, it reacts with chlorine or oxidants to generate hypobromous acid, delivering antimicrobial action across a broader pH range than chlorine alone. It also serves as a catalyst precursor and flame-retardant synergist in polymer processing.

Sodium bromide is available in pharmaceutical grade meeting Ph.Eur. and FCC specifications, as well as technical and oilfield grades supplied as dry powder or aqueous solution. It falls under HS code 28275100 and is subject to REACH registration requirements within the European Union.
